I noticed when I send a link from the app to a text MMS or iMessage recipient(s) or group, the text I add as a caption or info does not show up. Only the link is sent and it looks random in my text feed. Just a quirk I wish could be fixed.
No tabbed browsing. As useless as the Wikipedia app.
For years I’ve used this. I mean, has it been a decade? Maybe! I know I’ve had this for ages. For so long it’s worked better than the actual wiki app when it was new, back when that app was literally a shortcut that would open Safari. Well I’m not sure what happened, but within the last few months it’s basically become nearly unusable. You type something in, it doesn’t register you’ve tapped the text box several times, then it will basically soft freeze for several moments while it decides it’s going to search what I’ve typed. Sometimes during that lag, it’ll show what I’ve searched and the related options but if you press the wrong thing, you’ve set yourself up for a fight. Cause now the app will lag to go backwards, get confused when you type the correct thing, lag some more. No idea what just happened but if a literal link to wiki isn’t working, I have no reason to continue on with it. Nowadays, the actual Wiki app works! It’s been working for years now. So I can leave this behind. But thanks for the memories and help through the years!!!
I’ve been using this app for well over 10 years. It’s nice but these days dann mode support is really missing. 5 stars otherwise!
This is the only app I’ve come across that lets you browse different wikis across the web from one app. The app hasn’t been updated in awhile, however, and there’s no syncing of data across devices, which you might expect. The iPhone version and iPad version are different apps, and you can’t upgrade the free versions to the pro versions in the app - you have to buy the pro ones separately. There’s little layout functionality or display options, so while these apps used to look great on older versions of iOS/iPadOS, they’re getting a little long in the tooth now. Would love it if these apps got updates using current iOS/iPadOS technologies, such as widgets, better Shortcuts support, etc. Hopefully the developer decides to merge the four version of this app into one, and keep it updated in the future.
I’m very disappointed by this app. I used this specifically for Wiktionary and I could not add any Wikis at all. I thought this was an issue with my phone so I tried it on my nephew’s phone and had the same issue. Then, I thought that purchasing the Wikipanion Plus app would fix this issue and I still could not add any Wikis. The only Wiki available was Wikipedia—which is fine but I use it primarily for Wiktionary. I uninstalled the app several times and reinstalled it and same issue. I contacted their online support team and never got an answer. I waited two weeks to get a response and no response till this day so I had no choice but to get refunded for Wikipanion Plus. I tried everything I could think of! If they fix this issue, I would reinstall it in a heartbeat but I don’t think that they offer support for it anymore which is a shame because it really is a great app! When it works.
Adding wikis does not work. The wikis do not show up when I add them.
I’ve been using this app for years and it’s always been my go-to for Wikipedia. However, it’s strange that it still doesn’t have a dark mode setting.
Dark mode would be greatly appreciated. My only other issue is every time you open the app, the first thing you look up always takes a very long time to open (45 seconds - 1 minute) and sometimes will not load at all. Would gladly pay for upgrade if these are resolved.
Love it, used it forever. Looking for a dark mode alternative.
I’ve used this app for a long time, at least 7 years. It’s incredible how they never fixed the scrolling or resizing. And no dark mode in 2021
Very disappointed that this app still hasn’t enable dark mode. I’d be willing to pay for the premium version if that was the case.
I’ve used this app over 10 years now and I’ve oddly grown nostalgic of it. Been on my main screen for all of my iPhones. Still works amazing and does everything I need it to. Only wish would be for a dark mode. Here’s to another 10 years.
Good wiktionary support. Enough said
Lack of dark mode integration with the system makes this a JARRING app to use. I’ve been faithful to the app since my 3G but I can’t handle this anymore. Get a dark mode and we’ll talk fixing your review.
Used to be a great app but now it takes literally 5 minutes just to search for something. You can type something and click the link and the app will just sit there and freeze until it feels like loading.
I, like many other reviewers apparently, am a longtime fan of wikipanion. It would be fair to estimate that I’ve been using it everyday for nearly a decade. It’s fast, easy to use, no ads. My only request is a dark mode, this is the only app I use regularly that doesn’t have one. I briefly switched to the official Wikipedia app for that reason but found its navigation and UI lacking in comparison so I’m back. I’d happily pay for the pro version if it included a dark mode. Thanks so much for your work on this app!
This the simplest and best alternative to Wikipedia official app. I have been using this for many years. Only issue is lately the search results have got extremely slow, i don’t know what the issue is but hopefully the developers fix them.
I’ve been using this app since it first came out. Probably the longest running app on my phone. Always had some bugs with links and certain files, but it wasn’t a big deal. With the latest update I can no longer select text in an article. Which means I can’t copy text. Dealbreaker. Guess I have to find something else.
After updating, there’s no longer the option to select text, meaning I can’t copy any of the text and can’t look up any of the words in the dictionary or Wiktionary. Otherwise my favorite Wikipedia app, but please fix this bug. It’s very frustrating.
Better than official app! Easier to use! I keep trying the official app, and this one is still the beat!
I can’t find the bookmarking option anymore. I see it under history but those are a lot of steps to just mark a page for reading later.
I love this app. I think it’s way better than the official Wikipedia app for reading. I only ever use the official app if I want to edit. Also the dev is very responsive. Both times I reported something, I received a response very quickly.
Cannot see search options whatsoever after most recent update.
Can’t read the text when you click on bookmarks and search results. Go back to the way it was before this update.
Search results table has black text on black background on dark mode. Show stopper bug
Whatever update you released today broke the app. You need to roll back that update or release a new one that fixes the app. I can see no search results now and I cannot see the table of contents for anything.
Update on 01/16/20 made using iOS dark mode impossible.
Desperately needs dark mode!
I’ve been using Wikipanion from the beginning. I think I first had it on my iPhone 3G; now on the XR. I’ve tried other Wiki apps but they don’t compare. The only thing is that I use dark mode on any app that I can but when I open this I get a blast of white light to the face which momentarily blinds me. Please add dark mode
Guess the paid version is the only version being regularly updated anymore. Ok, I can get that, but would be nice if bugs could still be addressed in this version - like the broken navigation - when viewing a loaded wiki page, navigating by taping on a section hyperlink only works one time and on that page section, your view will remain unless you manually scroll, can’t use the section hyperlinks to navigate to any other section after the first choice.
Would like 3D Touch (peek pop) like the official app. Otherwise this one is way better!!! I love Wikipanion! Love the persistent back/forward buttons and the search bar. Really, this app design is pure poetry!
This used to be my absolute favorite app. It was probably the second app I ever acquired on my iPhone a decade ago. Now the load times are unbearable. I’ll often just use a Safari to search because it isn’t worth the wait. Please fix this and the app will be perfect again.
Extremely useful and easy to use app. However: I’d like to have a way to collapse or hide all the “Part of a series” etc. category/subcategory lists at the top of some entries. That stuff can go on and on and is just really annoying.
Wikipanion’s rare update is a disaster: Now pages are locked in frozen stasis for minutes at a time while they load. It’s the same as the old problem, except this time, you see a chunk of the page (but it won’t move). In a way, it’s even more frustrating...
I've had this app on all my devices for forever. It's been a reliable go-to and a must have app. Easy to use, visually simple, no clutter. Long time user for as long as you update!
I’m a person who reads at least 3 Wikipedia articles everyday, even if it’s just random things that come to my mind. I got an iPhone 3GS in 2009-my first smartphone- and Wikipanion was one of the first apps I downloaded. I can proudly say I’ve used this app daily for a decade now and still going!! This was the first Wikipedia app ever made for the App Store and I’d say is arguably the best. I’ve tried the others and even the official wiki app- I never made the switch from Wikipanion. Thank you so much Robert Chin for creating the first Wikipedia app on the App Store and for making Wikipedia on iPhone a smooth process. I’m not sure how much attention your app gets anymore ever since the official wiki app came out, but I really hope you see this review and realize that you created one of the better functioning and most essential applications to hit the App Store during its early years. And again, this app is still a daily use for me. Still functioning quite well.
...now it hangs, sometimes up to 30 seconds, when opening an article.
The app used to be the best. I used it literally everyday. Some badness has happened to it though, and now it hangs when opening and when searching articles. It is become so bad, I have been forced to use the official Wikipedia app, and that app is horrible! Maybe the developer will fix it, maybe not. I am not sure I will know because I have deleted it. This app used to be so good, however.
Bookmarking is broken. There hasn't been an update in 6 months and attempts to contact the developer have gone unanswered. It's too bad because I haven't found another Wikipedia app with decent bookmarking.
This has always been my favorite wiki app, but recently there are problems with the display when I use it on my iPhone 8. Are there any plans to update to fix this problem?
This app would be perfect if it had a night mode. Will be using the Wikipedia app until such an update.
Bring back the ability to SEARCH!! Otherwise what is the main point of this app?!?!
App freezes every time I try to open a page. No updates to fix this. Just deleted and downloaded the main Wikipedia app. So much better now.
Wikipanion is easily the app I have logged the most hours into of any app ever programmed. I love it. It is superb and unmatched in its usability and features. I would marry these 1’s and 0’s if I could, but not until you guys fix the search bar. I hate sometimes having to wait >30 seconds for a Wikipedia page to load, with a wait like that I might as well use safari. Please fix this app and return it to its former perfection.
I’ve used this for what feels like forever— probably at least 7 years. It’s been good, but it’s getting tougher around the edges. Really needs better slide-right-to-go-back animation. And if I 3D Touch the icon and select search, the search interface is not only completely messed up, but it plain and simple doesn’t work. Always returns zero results.
I’ve been using this app since around 2010, when there was no other wiki app. This is definitely the best one. Intuitive and simple to use.
On my iPhone X the wiktionary page is completely unusable. Wiktionary is my only use case in this app. Please fix it!
I replaced Wikipedia's own app with this one just so I could play all the audio files. It does the job.
